DEER CROSSING

FamilyWarning
Where you see itRural roads, dawn and dusk country

What it means

Deer cross the road in this area often enough to earn a sign. They travel in groups and move most at dawn and dusk.

What you should do

Slow at dawn and dusk, use high beams when alone on the road, and if one deer crosses, expect a second. Brake firmly in your lane; do not swerve into oncoming traffic or trees.

Memory trick

One deer on the sign means several deer in the woods. The first one you see is rarely the last.

The mistake drivers make

Swerving. More harm comes from the swerve than from the animal: braking hard and staying in your lane is almost always the safer physics.
