WINDING ROAD

Where you see itHills, canyons, river roads

What it means

A series of curves begins, left and right in succession, for the distance shown on any plaque beneath. One curve is a bend; three or more get this sign.

What you should do

Pick a comfortable speed before the first curve and hold it. Stay in your lane on every bend; winding roads are where lane drift meets oncoming traffic.

Memory trick

The S-shaped arrow is the road doing a little dance. Match its rhythm, don’t fight it.

The mistake drivers make

Treating the straightaways between curves as chances to speed up, then braking hard into every bend. Smooth and steady wins the canyon.
