REST AREA

Where you see itHighways, spaced along long routes

What it means

A safe place to stop, stretch, and rest is ahead. Rest areas exist because drowsy driving is as dangerous as impaired driving.

What you should do

If you are yawning, drifting, or blinking long: stop here. Fifteen minutes of rest beats every trick with windows and radios, none of which work.

Memory trick

The road offering you a bed. Sleepy is a mechanical problem: the machine needs to stop.

The mistake drivers make

Pushing through drowsiness to "make time." A microsleep at 70 mph covers a football field with no one driving.
