RAILROAD CROSSING AHEAD

ColorYellow
ShapeCircle
FamilyWarning
Where you see itWell before railroad tracks

What it means

Train tracks cross the road ahead. The circle is one of only two shapes reserved for a single meaning; round means rails.

What you should do

Start looking and listening for a train now, not at the tracks. Slow enough that you could stop before the rails if lights flash or a train appears.

Memory trick

Round = wheels = train. The only round sign on the road is about the only vehicle that cannot stop for you.

The mistake drivers make

Racing lowering gates or driving around them. A train at speed needs a mile or more to stop; the gate’s timing is not a suggestion.
