NO U-TURN

ColorWhite with red circle
ShapeSquare
FamilyRegulatory
Where you see itIntersections, medians, freeway crossovers

What it means

Turning around here is prohibited. The red circle and slash over the U-shaped arrow means the pictured move is illegal at this spot.

What you should do

Continue to a place where turning around is legal: another intersection, a marked turn pocket, or a side street. The detour costs a minute; the U-turn costs a ticket or worse.

Memory trick

Red circle + slash = "not here." Whatever is under the slash is the forbidden move.

The mistake drivers make

Assuming quiet traffic makes it fine. The ban exists because of what you cannot see: hidden driveways, crests, or oncoming lanes with poor sightlines.
